During the last five years we have worked with Secondary Schools to prevent homophobic bullying. Now Primary Schools are asking for our help too. And that’s why Stonewall has extended its Education for All campaign to all 25,000 primary schools across the nation by producing a teacher training DVD, Celebrating Difference.

But we need your help to fund the reproduction and distribution of Celebrating Difference and other materials to all 25,000 primary schools. So join us for this year’s walk and help us change the school experiences for children, young people and their teachers.

Primary Schools campaign 2011: 'Celebrating Difference' - challenging homophobia in primary schools

Children grow up in many different kinds of families. Some live with their mum and dad. Some are adopted. Others have two mums or two dads. Some have one parent.

Three quarters of primary school teachers hear children use the phrases ‘that’s so gay’ or ‘you’re so gay’ and two in five primary school teachers say children experience homophobic bullying.

By celebrating difference schools can become more inclusive for all our children. However, many teachers lack confidence to talk about different families and nine in ten have not had any specific training on approaching these issues in an age-appropriate way.

“I feel the younger it is addressed (from age five upwards), the more receptive the children are to believing other ways of life are acceptable…just teach them that some people have other ways of life and it is just as normal as the ways of life they are familiar with.”

Alice, teacher, primary school.
